One other fishing reel detail that deserves all the attention is design variety that makes selection pretty difficult sometimes. In time, as fishing developed, fishermen managed to come up with different kinds of equipment, specialized for the different fishing occupations. What makes fishing different? The kind of fish you are after makes the crucial decisive factor for the choice of the fishing reel, but the waters and the season also become selection factors.

The fishing reel variety is quite impressive. Among the types of fishing reels available there are centrepin reels, bait casting reels, spinning (fixed spool) reels, spin cast reels, and underspin or trigger spin reels, to count just a few main ones. Each type of fishing reel has its own characteristics and mode of operating, which you should definitely be familiar with in order to make the best of your fishing experience.

It is also important to know a few things about the mechanisms of fishing reels. When we discuss the technical features we need to refer to both reels and drags. In the direct-drive fishing reel, the spool and handle are coupled directly; therefore when the handle moves in one direction the spool makes the same movement. In an anti-reverse fishing reel, on the other hand, there is a mechanism which lets the line play out while the handle stays motionless. The drag mechanism is a means of applying variable pressure to the turning spool. The purpose of the drag mechanism in the fishing reel is to provide the right amount of friction to the line.
